Head SPA and trichology deal with the same area - the scalp and hair - so they are often confused. W practice, they are two different services with different goals. It's good to distinguish between them, because that determines what you can promise a client - while they are also worth combining, as they complement each other perfectly.
What does trichology deal with
Trichology is a field that deals with scalp and hair problems: excessive hair loss, thinning, dandruff, excessive oiliness, and irritation. A trichologist takes a medical history, assesses the scalp (often using a trichoscope), recommends treatments and at-home care, and, if necessary, refers the client to a doctor. Trichological treatments target a specific problem and are usually performed as a series.
What is Head SPA
Head SPA is a care and relaxation ritual: scalp cleansing, exfoliation, water massage, steam sauna, masks, neck and face massage, and aromatherapy. Its purpose is to provide deep care for the scalp and hair and promote relaxation. It's a service for people who want to care for their scalp and unwind - not a treatment for problems.
Key differences
- Goal: trichology - solving a specific problem; Head SPA - care and relaxation.
- Process: trichology - diagnosis, targeted treatments, a series of visits; Head SPA - a repeatable ritual lasting 30-90 minutes.
- Client: trichology - someone with a scalp or hair problem; Head SPA - anyone who wants to take care of themselves, even without any issues.
- Communication: with Head SPA, we talk about care, cleansing, and relaxation - we don't promise therapeutic results.
How a trichology clinic can use Head SPA
- As a step in a treatment plan - thorough scalp cleansing, exfoliation, and steam are good preparation before applying products recommended by the trichologist.
- As a maintenance visit - after completing a course of treatments, the client can return regularly for Head SPA instead of disappearing from the salon.
- As a service for new clients - many people won't go straight to a trichologist, but will gladly come in for a relaxing treatment. It's an opportunity to spot a problem along the way and suggest a consultation.
- As a way to increase the value of each visit - combining a trichology consultation with a Head SPA ritual creates a premium package that sets the practice apart.
And a Head SPA salon - when to refer clients to a trichologist
W it’s also important to have guidelines for the reverse situation. If you notice increased hair loss, inflammatory changes, sores, or significant flaking during a treatment, or if a client complains of an itchy or sore scalp, don’t try to “treat” it with a Head SPA treatment. Recommend a consultation with a trichologist or dermatologist. Working with a nearby trichology practice can also generate referrals in both directions.
Which setup works best in a trichology practice
W a trichology practice, some work is done with the client sitting or semi-reclined (consultation, scalp assessment), and some with the client lying down (washing, steam, masks). That’s why these work well:
- beds with electrically adjustable backrests - one setup for consultations and treatments, without moving the client; see our Head SPA beds,
- hairdressing wash unit with a Head SPA function - if the salon has limited space; see the HP5B Head SPA wash unit,
- freestanding wash basin - if there is no way to connect to a water supply in the salon; see our Head SPA wash basins.
Compare the setups in our guide: Head SPA wash basin or bed - which should you choose.
Training for trichologists
Trichologists know the scalp better than anyone, but Head SPA techniques - water massage, steam, neck and face massage, and creating a ritual-like atmosphere - are a skill of their own. In our Head SPA training courses, we teach the complete treatment process, either in person in Warsaw or online.
